Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012. LaValle Stadium – Stony Brook v. Binghamton

Freshman Kristen Baker shined in an America East match against Binghamton Sunday night, with two goals in the university’s dramatic win.

Baker scored both in the second half and final minutes of extra time, with only 3 minutes and 54 seconds remaining.

The scoring started early in the game, with Binghamton midfielder Brittany Walsh scoring in the 13th minute after a free kick into the box from defender Meghan McCarty.

Stony Brook seemed to wake up after the goal, and started pressing more and carrying the ball towards Binghamton’s side of the field. In the 16th minute, defender Baker took a long, powerful shot towards the net and beat goalkeeper Carrie Martin, making it 1-1.

Stony Brook were more on the offensive in the first half, with seven shots on goal to Binghamton’s five. But Binghamton had no problem shutting down many Stony Brook plays and fighting for the ball. The first half ended in a tie, a fairly accurate representative of the way the two teams were playing.

In the second half, Stony Brook dominated offensively. They had 13 shots on goal, compared to Binghamton’s six. But still, the second half ended, and the score remained 1-1.

After a 40 minute lightning warning delay, the two teams returned to the field, where they would play two ten minute halves, unless someone scored.

And that someone happened to be Baker, as she scored with only 3 minutes and 54 seconds left in the game, off a long cross into the back of the net.

Stony Brook dominated in overall shots, beating Binghamton 24-12. They also had seven corner kicks to Binghamton’s one.

Stony Brook’s record in conference games is now 1-1-0. Their next game is on Thursday, October 4 at 7 pm against Vermont at LaValle Stadium.
